Introducing PlatAfrica 2020 – Designed for Men of Platinum

Over the past few weeks, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant change in the way we live and work, as countries around the world impose lockdown restrictions to reduce infection rates.

This has presented us all with uncertainty as we adjust to our changed environment. After careful consideration, Anglo American Platinum, in association with Metal Concentrators SA (Metcon) and Platinum Guild International (PGI) India, has taken the decision to continue with the launch of the 2020 PlatAfrica Jewellery Design and Manufacture Competition.

We recognise the impact of a national lockdown on business operations and institution curriculums, and hope that by launching the competition now, we can proactively ensure that all our talented designers who wish to participate still have the best opportunity and sufficient time to do so. Whilst we have set out some preliminary deadlines, we acknowledge the uncertainty that arises from the current situation and remain guided by the continued information provided to us by government to ensure the health and safety of all participants, employees and stakeholders. We will keep you readily informed should there be any changes to the process.

This year, the theme is Designed for MEN OF PLATINUM. Consumer research identifies men’s jewellery as a growing demand segment for platinum jewellery. However, there are only a small number of product offerings within this category- we see this as an opportunity to design pieces for this emerging consumer,- and tap into a seemingly untouched realm of creative possibilities. We invite you to push the boundaries of platinum jewellery design and innovation and submit your statement pieces for PlatAfrica’s first men’s jewellery collection.

The competition is open to students, apprentices and professional jewellers in South Africa. It provides both students and professionals the opportunity to work with precious platinum metal and provides detailed feedback, enabling the development of jewellery design and manufacturing skills.

The theme for this year is: Men of Platinum
