Coloured Gemstones
Gemfields is a world-leading responsible miner and marketer of coloured gemstones, specialising in Mozambican rubies and Zambian emeralds. As the majority owner and operator of the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique and the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, the group has played an instrumental role in raising awareness of the beauty and rarity of African gemstones and the importance of ensuring that gemstone profits return value to their countries of origin.
Fall In Love With Gemstones
Two of the “Big Three” coloured gemstones – along with sapphires – emeralds and rubies are valued for their intense colours. Early humans’ fascination with colour made them fall in love with coloured gemstones, and little has changed. People are still drawn to their vibrant hues. Pure intense red or bluish red are considered the most desirable colours for rubies; while emeralds with a rich, even hue, like the extraordinary Chipembele, unearthed at Kagem in 2021, are most sought-after. Inclusions – the little imperfections that make each gemstone unique – are also a key aspect of their character and what makes people fall in love with them.
Gemfields - Creating A Long Term Positive Impact
Through initiatives aimed at health, education and livelihoods in local communities – and conservation programmes to protect Africa’s great wildlife and biodiversity – Gemfields endeavours to create a long term positive impact and champions transparency across the industry. It now looks ahead to scaling up its efforts with the help of its charitable arm, the Gemfields Foundation, launched in 2020, which enables donors to contribute funding directly towards community and conservation projects.
