Prins & Prins: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Education

For over four decades, Prins & Prins has been a gem in Cape Town’s rich cultural landscape. More than that, it has become a cornerstone for education, craftsmanship, and authenticity in the jewellery industry.

Situated in a heritage building from 1752, this unique establishment combines a passion for gems, history, and meticulous craftsmanship, all underscored by a personal commitment to educating the public.

The driving force behind this venture, renowned geologist Dr Petre Prins, has created a legacy that spans beyond the sale of diamonds and jewellery to a deep dedication to sharing knowledge with tourists and locals alike.

RICH HERITAGE

The foundation of Prins & Prins is situated in a building with a history that predates modern South Africa. Originally one of the first residential homes constructed in the area, it later functioned as a wine merchant depot before being repurposed by Dr Prins.

In the early 1990s, recognising the potential in both the tourism industry and the building itself, Dr Prins acquired the property at auction just before the 1994 elections. At that time, the building was deemed a risky investment. However, with a keen eye for opportunity, Dr Prins looked beyond the scepticism, envisioning a space that would resonate with tourists seeking authenticity and trust.

JEWELLERY EXPERT

Riana Groenewald’s journey with Prins & Prins began in 1989 when she started as a receptionist. With no prior knowledge of the jewellery industry, she was initially overwhelmed. However, over the years, her commitment to learning and growing in the business led her to become a key figure.

Now, with 35 years of experience, she has seen the company transform into a respected name in the jewellery industry, especially among tourists.

THE MUSEUM OF GEMS AND JEWELLERY

The Museum of Gems and Jewellery, a project initiated by Dr Prins, is one of the most unique aspects of Prins & Prins. What started as a collection of personal treasures, such as unusual gemstones, antique tools and rare pieces from over 40 years of collecting, has transformed into a full-fledged museum that educates visitors on the value of gemstones, diamonds and the history of jewellery.

Located in the same building as the showroom, the museum offers a visual and educational experience that captures the evolution of jewellery from ancient times to the present day.

Dr Prins, who holds a PhD in geology and geochemistry, is passionate about sharing his knowledge. “We wanted to show what mankind did with the treasures of the earth,” he says. “How did ancient civilisations use rocks, gemstones and metals to improve their lives? How did South Africa, as the land of diamonds and gold, contribute to this rich history?”

THE FUTURE OF PRINS & PRINS

While the museum and showroom have become central to the identity of Prins & Prins, there are constant efforts to grow and evolve. Dr Prins and Groenewald remain committed to offering visitors an authentic African diamond experience, combining the rich history of South Africa with the precision and artistry of diamond cutting.

With the rise of digital platforms and a growing awareness of sustainable practices in the jewellery industry, the future of Prins & Prins looks promising. However, the heart of the company will always remain in the hands-on approach, where education and craftsmanship meet in a genuine, personal setting.

As Dr Prins reflects on his journey, he is quick to share his appreciation for the support and growth of the business. “It’s a joy to see how far we’ve come. From a small business with a huge debt to what we’ve become today, I couldn’t be prouder of the legacy we’ve built.”
