Intsika Jewellery Project For Students

Jewellers’ Network had the privilege of attending Richline South Africa’s annual Open Day for the Intsika Jewellery Project for students. It was an incredible success, with groups of students coming through on various days to tour the factory and learn about casting and all things Richline.

Richline hosts this Open Day annually. This year, the company opened its doors to the remaining students of the Intsika Jewellery Project, which currently has approximately 90 students at the Hub. The event took place over two days in November, similar to the previous year. The Intsika Jewellery Project is situated on the Rand Refinery property and is supported by MQA funding. Established in 2003, the project serves as a hub of excellence in response to the high rate of unemployment, the shortage of skills, and the lack of sustainable small business hubs among historically disadvantaged communities. Through its cutting-edge qualifications, the project is helping to create a young, empowered workforce capable of producing world-class, locally manufactured and designed jewellery for both the South African and international markets.

Richline South Africa, operational for the past 12 years, is the country’s largest jewellery manufacturer and forms part of the global Richline Group. During the Open Day, students were given access to the factory, where they learned about the production processes and participated in informative discussions led by Mark, the workshop manager. Richline is known for its entry-level and affordable jewellery that meets international quality standards. For many students, this visit offered a rare opportunity to experience a large-scale factory environment. They were exposed to how Richline maintains its high standards through the efficient operation of a mass production facility.

Jewellers' Network commends Richline SA for its efforts in equipping students with invaluable knowledge that will support them on their journey into the workforce and set them up for future success.

The factory primarily fulfills large orders from Richline USA and other local enterprises. Using specialized equipment unique to Richline South Africa, the facility has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 pieces per day for simpler styles. Each item undergoes rigorous quality control at every stage of the process. If an item does not meet the required standards, it is scrapped and melted down for reuse in pressing, soldering, and setting, thus minimizing waste. Every section of the factory performs daily stock takes to ensure that all materials are fully accounted for. To keep production running smoothly, strict procedures must be followed, targets must be met, and the quality must be impeccable. With a workforce of 80 to 100 employees, Richline enforces comprehensive policies and procedures, including health and safety regulations, emergency evacuation protocols, and disciplinary guidelines. While each employee has a specific role, they are also expected to assist across different areas as needed, promoting flexibility and teamwork.

The four-day experience observing the production process at Richline was an incredible opportunity for the students who participated. It opened our eyes and broadened our artistic perspective for future endeavours in jewellery manufacturing. Those who are selected to participate in the incubation project will no doubt reflect on this experience as they craft their jewellery pieces. We are truly grateful to Johan and Debbie for making this opportunity possible.
