E.G.L. South Africa

E.G.L. South Africa has noted a recent statement published by the International Gem Society (IGS) concerning historical overgrading by certain laboratories using the EGL name. In the interest of clarity and transparency, we wish to issue a definitive response to our clients and the industry.

E.G.L. South Africa’s commitment is demonstrated by:

■  Independent oversight: our grading processes are conducted entirely within our South African facilities by our team of highly qualified and locally credentialed gemologists.
■  Stringent standards: we adhere to a strict, internally developed grading rubric that is calibrated to ensure accuracy and consistency, providing a reliable assessment of a diamond’s true value.
■ Transparent certification: every certificate issued by E.G.L. South Africa clearly displays our full name and logo, ensuring there is no confusion about the origin and authority of the report.
■  E.G.L. South Africa is a member of The Diamond Dealers Club of South Africa and the Jewellery Council of South Africa – a powerful testament to our company’s integrity and standing. This reputation is rigorously earned, as these bodies impose stringent membership requirements, including strict financial probity, a proven track record of ethical conduct, and a commitment to the exacting codes of practice which govern these prestigious institutions.

The IGS statement serves as a valuable reminder for buyers to “always verify certifications and trust reliable grading labs.” E.G.L. South Africa fully endorses this principle. Furthermore, we wish to state unequivocally that the laboratory referenced in the IGS report is entirely separate from our own. E.G.L. South Africa is
an independent entity, with no legal, operational, or corporate affiliations to any other gemological laboratory outside of South Africa that uses the EGL name.
“The IGS commentary rightly highlights the importance of laboratory provenance,” says Brenda Rosenthal, Managing Director, E.G.L. South Africa. “However, it is crucial to distinguish between different laboratories which may share a similar name but operate under completely different standards and ownership. Our reputation, built over years, is rooted in ethical practices and grading integrity. The actions of an unaffiliated lab on another continent do not reflect our values or our work.”
