EOTO HYBRID MANUFACTURING JEWELLERY – BENCH WORKSPACE

EOTO – ‘ each one teach one’

The jewellery industry is booming, driven by rising consumer expectations for personalized and well-maintained pieces. This demand creates a strong need for skilled bench jewellers. Most entry-level bench jewellers begin their careers in trade shops, retail stores, or by working with jewellers who contract their skills to manufacturers, designers, and retailers. Manufacturing roles are available in various critical functions, including polishing, casting, setting, and operating increasingly sophisticated machinery. As you advance in your career, opportunities may include becoming a master jeweller, managing production for a manufacturer, or even starting your own business.

Bench Work Tools

If you enjoy working with your hands and bringing your ideas to life, a career in jewellery manufacturing arts might be perfect for you. This field is diverse, offering many specialized skills, and may involve working with precious metals and rare gemstones. The training program lasts one year, and upon completion, you will receive the Certified Bench Jeweller (CBJ) certification along with your own set of jeweller’s tools.

EOTO Hybrid Manufacturer Jewellery – Skills Programme Proposal

Executive Summary

South Africa’s Jewellery Manufacturing Industry faces major challenges — import competition, factory closures, loss of artisans, and the lingering impact of COVID-19. With unemployment around 44%, urgent action is needed.

EOTO Hybrid Manufacturer Jewellery (EHMJ) proposes establishing a Jewellery Hybrid Incubator in the Western Cape — the first of its kind in South Africa — integrating training, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship. The pilot will train young artisans in world-class jewellery craftsmanship and business skills, creating employment, enterprise, and export opportunities.

We seek strategic investment and grant funding to build a sustainable model that can expand nationwide, empowering South Africans while preserving the country’s legacy as a world leader in gold, platinum, and diamond craftsmanship.

Rationale / Background

Despite South Africa’s rich jewellery heritage, the industry faces a shortage of skilled artisans and limited youth access to vocational training. The sector, however, holds great potential — combining creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship to address unemployment and promote local beneficiation.

Through this initiative, EOTO aims to:

  • Bridge the gap between education and employment.
  • Create sustainable jobs and small businesses.
  • Preserve and grow artisanal skills.
  • Strengthen South Africa’s global competitiveness.

Vision

To empower young South Africans with sustainable livelihoods through jewellery manufacturing skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation — building a globally competitive local industry.

Mission

  • Provide accredited, high-quality jewellery training and mentorship.
  • Bridge education and employment through real-world experience.
  • Partner with industry and government to expand access and opportunity.
