Gemology courses

My gemological career started in 1985 when I met the late Ian Campbell who said he would help me if I was interested in studying gemology.
I enrolled in the Gem-A gemological course which was a syllabised course.
At the time I was working in the movie industry as a lighting cameraman and then went on to directing. I studied every moment I got and spent every weekend in Ian’s laboratory.
I qualified in 1987, resigned my job and opened my lab in Durban in 1989.
From there I was offered managerial positions in exclusive jewellery shops and gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in the retail sector.
I kept myself up to date and would do gemological work after hours.

I always felt that if a student didn’t understand something or didn’t do well it was the teacher’s fault.
I make it my mission to make sure all our students understand and if they don’t, I need to explain in a way that they do.
I remember seeing a retired teacher who said she never marked a student’s answer to a question wrong, she simply stated “not yet”.
I am passionate about teaching and love sharing my 30 plus years with anyone interested.
In this day and age every person in our trade should know the basics of gemstone identification and if they have anything to do with diamonds should have attended a practical diamond grading course.

Courses we offer online and in the classroom:

Basic gemidentification:

This course is available online as well as a classroom course.

Jewellery valuations:

If you know how to identify, grade and value colored three-day stones and diamonds, then you can do the online course. If not, then we offer a three-day classroom course.

Rough diamond grading:

The first part of this course is online and then you will be required to do a two day practical.

Practical diamond grading:

The first part of this course is online and then you will be required to do a one day practical at the lab.

“I make it my mission to make sure all students understand and if they don’t,
I need to explain in a way that they can.”
