Information that we’ve previously examined and which was discussed in our recent Zoom session is the critical importance of the description of different cuts. In fact, one of the most common errors that we encounter in jewellery valuations (apart from inaccurate identification and grading) is the incorrect description of the cut of a gemstone.
We see Old European cuts referred to as rose cuts, rose cuts referred to as old mine cuts, old mine cuts referred to as rose cuts etc.
When it comes to jewellery valuations, detail and description are extremely important.
There is simply no excuse; there are plenty of references to cut in books and available online to easily cross-check your determination. I hope that this will set the record straight and we will stop seeing these incorrect references to cut.
Below are a few examples of cuts that valuers are getting wrong.
Kind regards
Jeremy
