RAND REFINERY

Dear Valued Customer,

It gives me great pleasure to share with you Rand Refinery’s Sustainability Report, covering the past three years of our journey.

As Africa’s only London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) accredited refinery and a trusted global referee, we recognise that gold’s true worth lies not only in its market price but in the integrity of how it is sourced, refined, and shared with the world. This report reflects our conviction that responsibly refined gold is not just a commodity, but a catalyst for trust, sustainability, and long-term prosperity.

Over the past three years, we have invested significantly in reducing our environmental footprint while strengthening our social impact and governance practices. Sustainability is embedded in every ounce of gold we refine. It is not just about compliance; it is about ensuring that our work uplifts communities, protects our planet, and creates enduring value for all stakeholders.

During this time, we’ve reduced energy use by 24% and invested over R75 million in renewables, including a 4.5 MW solar farm. By 2027, our Refinery will run entirely on renewable energy, returning power to the national grid and benefitting thousands of households. We’ve also cut water consumption by 23% and are on track to reach a 44% reduction, while safeguarding biodiversity around Germiston Lake and introducing greening projects in local schools.

Just as importantly, we’ve sustained over three and a half years without a lost-time injury, underlining our deep commitment to safety. Through our Khula Nathi wellness programme and initiatives against gender-based violence, we’ve shown that business can and must support society’s most pressing needs. In education and skills, we’ve invested more than R43 million, funded nearly 100 bursaries, and empowered 55+ small jewellery businesses with mentorship, market access, and interest-free loans.

We are equally proud of our progress in redefining product leadership. Through RandPure® and our adoption of the Gold Bar Integrity initiative and blockchain-based Bullion Integrity Ledger™ adds transparency on our leading best practices on traceable gold. Every bar and coin produced now carries not just a guarantee of purity, but a story of provenance and responsibility.

Our practices align with global standards, from the OECD Due Diligence Guidelines to South Africa’s King IV principles, ensuring that our operations meet the highest expectations of regulators, partners, and customers alike.

Looking forward, we remain committed to leading Africa’s precious metals industry into a future defined by ethical innovation, inclusivity, and impact. Every ounce of gold we refine carries a promise: that Africa’s gold can shine brighter when it tells a story of purpose and possibility.

I invite you to read our Sustainability Report and join us in shaping a future where gold does more than glitter, it builds trust, empowers people, and protects our shared planet.
