Elevate Responsible Sourcing Standards
in West Africa
Rand Refinery partners with Ghana’s Gold Coast Refinery (GCR) to support the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to locally refine artisanal and small-scale (ASM) gold and elevate responsible sourcing standards in West Africa.
Germiston, 20 January 2026 – Rand Refinery, Africa’s leading London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery accredited refiner, has entered into a strategic partnership with GCR earlier this month. The agreement between Rand Refinery and GCR will see Rand Refinery provide technical, operational and commercial (TOC) supervision to GCR, enabling the local refining of ASM material and the achievement of internationally recognised assaying and refining standards.
GCR, established in 2016, is a gold refinery based in Accra, Ghana, with a refining capacity in excess of 80 tons per annum and the potential to grow in the future.
GCR has signed an agreement with the Ghana GoldBod to refine up to 1,000 kilograms of ASM gold doré per week, meeting responsibly mined and sourcing standards. The government-owned Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is the sole entity authorised to buy, sell and export gold from small-scale miners in
Ghana.
The signing of the agreement is a momentous occasion, and Rand Refinery, being the leading LBMA Good Delivery accredited refiner on the continent, stands ready to support the aspirations of the Ghana government for local refining through our partnership with Gold Coast Refinery. We are committed to working with GCR and GoldBod to implement the necessary framework to ensure that the material sourced meets international responsible sourcing requirements, says Rand Refinery CEO, Dean Subramanian.
As a recognised LBMA-accredited refinery, Rand Refinery enforces strict, audited compliance to eliminate conflict gold, combat money laundering, and ensure environmental and social responsibility (ESG) throughout its supply chain. Rand Refinery prioritises sustainability through its People, Planet, Product and Provenance framework, aiming to ensure Africa’s gold benefits local communities while reducing environmental impact.
Through these strategic partnerships, Rand Refinery will further strengthen its footprint on the African continent as the preferred refining partner, supporting and enabling local ASM refining while ensuring ethical sourcing and transparency. Rand Refinery is committed to supporting and developing Africa’s ASM sector as a key enabler of country economic growth.
