Crossing over into a new year usually brings a measure of renewal, motivation to get ourselves into gear, and to crack on. Yet, as we approached 2022, I couldn’t shake off an underlying trepidation. After giving it more thought, I realized I wasn’t the only one feeling uneasy.
As a global community, the whole world has taken a beating. We’ve been through the many shades of a unique pandemic that has left many feeling seriously knocked about and in need of recuperation.
There are few more deserving of recuperation, renewal, and commendation than the plucky service providers in this country. Think of the nurses, firefighters, police, cleaners, counsellors, child carers, teachers and so many people who don’t get the recognition they should.
A huge THANK YOU to these ones! May we continue to support these amazing people in every way we can.
Looking Back for Lessons
We can’t go back and redo the past, but we can make a difference in the year ahead.
Fun Fact: Did you know that a steam engine can pull 14 000 tons?
But, that happens only when every single nut and bolt works with every other nut and bolt. If one fails, the whole engine can come to a grinding standstill.
Our industry, like so many other industries, has been hit particularly hard. But if we support each other and pull together like a steam train, we can build what we have lost pretty quickly.
The people of this country are amazing in that we can pull together when we have to or when we want to. Every culture came together during the World Cup held in South Africa, as did people of different cultures who participated in the legendary Comrades Marathon, for example. I believe that this tangle of people with their various skills, motivation, and aptitudes have the ability to change the world.
How to Make 2022 Great
I don’t claim to have all the answers. I have left whatever is out of my control to God. But, here we are in 2022. And what we do have control over is our response to things. The freedom to choose is a uniquely human gift. We do well to use it for our good.
So, how can we make 2022 a better year? Simply by choosing to make every day count. If we decide to have a good day every day, we will automatically have a good year!
